Deposit

A R2000 per person non-refundable deposit is needed when booking is done. The balance is to be paid by latest six weeks before departure date. If this is not done, you'll forfeit your reservation and deposit. No cancellation after the above date.

If you would like us to do your flight booking as well, a non-refundable deposit of R4000 per person is needed.

The R2000 deposit forms part of your tour price.

Insurance

As a rule we highly recommend our passengers to arrange comprehensive travel insurance once booked for a tour to cover all possible losses, injuries, cancellations, etc.*

Two superb meals (dinner & breakfast) are served per day and are included in the price.

Route

The route goes from Boksburg East via Potchefstroom, Klerksdorp, Bloemhof, Kimberley, De Aar, Upington, Ariamsvlei, Holoog, Keetmanshoop, Mariental, Windhoek, Kranzberg, Otjiwarongo, Omaruru to Swakopmund & back to Windhoek.

Fly from Windhoek to Johannesburg or Cape Town or abroad.

Bus Transport & Excursions

All the excursions by bus, as per the itinerary, as well as the entry fees, are included in the tour price. (Excluding optional extras).

Luggage

You are limted to one suitcase, max 20 kg, and one piece of hand luggage, max. 7 kg. This is in accordance with your flight limitations.

Dress

We are in Africa. You don’t need to dress up for meals. Take casual clothing, a hat and comfortable walking shoes.

A dining car, lounge car with bar facilities, friendly staff and good food.

The flight to Windhoek (before the train tour) from your home is NOT included in the tour price. We will gladly do your booking on your behalf. Current flight price is +-R2000 per person. ANY changes to your flight ticket, for whatever reason, would be for your own expense. See Travel Insurance above as well.

If you have Voyager Miles or any other way of getting a discount, I.e.: Certain Medical Health Schemes have such benefits, please do the booking yourselves BUT inform us accordingly.

Please ensure that you do not book on any flight departing from Windhoek before 12:00 (Namibian time). The flight takes +- 2 hours to JHB & CPT, whilst Namibian time differs one hour from SA’s time.

You can travel by bus as well, though it is not recommended. It is a 23 hour journey by road from JHB or CPT.

Take the N14 Freeway from Centurion in a Westerly direction towards Krugersdorp for +_30 km. Continue straight onto the R28 at the Hendrik Potgieter street intersection and pass the Silver Star Casino on the left. Follow this toad into Krugersdorp for about 9 km. Turn right into Luipaard Street (just before the railway subway) and turn left into Market street (after 0.8 km). Follow this street for 300 m. Krugersdorp station is right in front of you.

From Johannesburg:

From Jo’burg CBD take the M1 South, join the N12 West and then join the N1 North towards Roodepoort. Take 14th Avenue off ramp and turn left at the first traffic light. Turn immediately right onto Hendrik Potgieter Street and drive past Hillfox shopping Centre on your right. Continue for +- 14 km until your reach the N14/R28 intersection. Turn left onto the R28 and pass the Silver Star Casino on the left. Follow this toad into Krugersdorp for about 9 km. From Sandton:

From Sandton take the N1 South towards Roodepoort. Take 14th Avenue off ramp and turn right at the first traffic light. From Alberton/Heidelberg/Durban:

Bus transport from the train (after the tour)

You can travel on a special arranged bus from Krugersdorp station to the Manhattan Hotel in Pretoria (C/o Andries and Scheiding Streets, near the Pretoria main station) at R170pp. Please indicate accordingly on the Reservation Form.

Passengers departing from the OR Tambo airport in Johannesburg will be transferred from Krugersdorp station at R170pp as well. Please avail your flight number and date/time of departure to us. Please do NOT book a flight on Day 10 of the trip. I.e.: From JHB to DBN.

Safe car parking

There is safe car parking available (covered) at the OR Tambo Airport. The parking area on the Southern side of the airport (ex Griffiths Road on the R21) charges only R25 per car per night! (This is highly recommendable). There is a free bus service available from the parking area to the airport.

Last note

With the huge increase in fuel costs (petrol & diesel) in recent times and the major increases in accommodation prices in Namibia over the past five years, this is by far the most affordable way of travelling through & lodging in Namibia.

ITINERARY

Namibia offers the visitor bountiful sunshine, abundance of wildlife, scenic beauty and a rich diversity of geological phenomena. The friendliness and cultural diversity of its people, a well-developed infrastructure and an extensive choice of parks and resorts make it a sought-after tourist destination to which visitors return again and again. Namibia derived its name from the Namib Desert, a unique geological feature renowned for the pristine and haunting quality of its landscape. Far from being lifeless and barren, this narrow strip of moist coastal desert features an unusual variety of desert-adapted flora and fauna, including a large number of endemic plant, bird and insect species.

DAY 1               WELCOME and DEPARTURE

Start arriving at Windhoek airport for transfer to Windhoek station, the day you have been excited about since making your booking. Your tour guide and JB Train Tours representative will welcome you while you enjoy a cup of coffee and a few biscuits.

Enjoy your first sumptuous meal and overnight on the train when travelling northwards to Okahandja & Kranzberg.

DAY 2               ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK

The tour departs early morning to the Etosha National Park. The Park is one of the major sanctuaries for wildlife in Africa and was proclaimed a game reserve by German Governor Von Lindequist in 1907.

The heart of the park is the Etosha Pans (Etosha means ‘place of dry water’). It is an extensive, flat depression of about 5 000 km². Game viewing takes place from our air-conditioned vehicles. There are 144 mammal species in the park, which covers an area of 22 270 km². This includes Elephant, Giraffe, Blue Wildebeest and Black Rhino. Among the predators are Lion, Cheetah, Leopard and several species of wild cat. Hyena and Jackal are the scavengers. Antelope species range from the majestic Eland to the shy little Damara Dik-Dik. The most striking of the antelope species is the Gemsbok, with its dramatic black and white markings. It also appears on the Namibia coat of arms.

Bird life is prolific and some 340 species have been identified, including Namibia’s national bird, the Crimson-Breast Shirke. Lunch (guests’ own account) is enjoyed at one of the camps.

DAY 3               OMARURU

Called the ‘Garden Town’ of Namibia. Omaruru is a town and constituency in the Erongo Region of Namibia. Its official population is 6,792. The town is situated by the Erongo Mountains, on the usually dry Omaruru River.
The town grew around a mission built in 1872 by Gottlieb Viehe, now a museum, and was attacked in 1904 during the Herero and Namaqua Genocide. Captain Franke's Tower was built in this period to defend the settlement.
The town is known for its annual festival, its winery and for the dinosaur footprints at nearby Otjihaenamparero. We’ll visit the biggest wine cellar in Namibia Kristalkellerei Winery– one of only three in the country! The white wine produced in this vineyard is unique and ‘the tales behind the story’ are interesting.

A unique feature in this town is the Tikoloshe root-carving factory on the outskirts of the town. Hardly any visitor leaves this place without a souvenir bought at this interesting venue.

Return to the train at Kranzberg.

DAY 4 SPITZKOPPE AND NORTH COAST to SWAKOPMUND HENTIES BAY AND THE CAPE CROSS SEAL RESERVE

Spitzkoppe is known as the ‘Matterhorn of Namibia’. It rises to an altitude of about 1 800 m. However, it is by no means Namibia’s highest mountain. Due to its striking features and outlines, it is the most famous mountain in the country. Situated in an endless dry landscape, the island of mountains can be seen from quite a distance. The enormous granite rocks were created more than 100 million years ago due to volcanic activities and subsequent erosion.

We continue to the small, thriving town of Henties Bay (the town was named after Major Hentie van der Merwe) before visiting the Cape Cross Seal Reserve north of Henties Bay. Here a prodigious number of Cape Fur seals flourish in the cold waters of the Benuegela Current. Numerous inlets and isolated parts of the shore serve as nurseries for the young. This area is also of historical significance, as the Portuguese navigator, Diego Cao, planted a cross at this point in the year 1486.

We make our way back to the train in Swakopmund in the late afternoon.

DAY 5 SWAKOPMUND / WALVIS BAY: MOON LANDSCAPE, WELWITSCHIA DRIVE, WALVIS BAY AND DUNE 7

Our day starts with a drive into the Namib Desert and a stop at a lookout point over the valley known as the Moon Landscape. Soft overlaying levels of earth, deposited some 450 million years ago and eroded over millennia, created the eerie landscape.

The Welwitschia Nature Drive takes us from vast plains where herds of Oryx, Springbok and Zebra roam the supernatural landscape of these badlands. The hardy survivor of the desert, the Welwitschia Mirabilis, can be seen along this route. One very large specimen, which is specially protected, is estimated to be 1 500 years old.

We then turn around to Walvis Bay for a lunch break (guests’ own account). It is a pretty South African style town with 25 000 inhabitants. Strategically located halfway down the coast of Namibia and with direct access to principal shipping routes it is a natural gateway for international trade.

We visit the Walvis Bay Lagoon, a great attraction in the Walvis Bay area. The tranquil stretch of water, its natural beauty accentuated by thousands of flamingos gathering at the rich feeding grounds, is over 3 000 years old. Because of its value as a wetlands area, it was declared a RAMSAR site (a conservation pertaining to wetlands was held in Ramsar, Iran, in 1971).

Dune 7, located on the outskirts of Walvis Bay, is the highest sand dune in the area. It is an unforgettable experience for those who feel inclined to challenge the height of this outstanding landmark to admire the view from the top.

DAY 6               SWAKOPMUND

The day is spent at leisure. If you don’t visit Mola Mola (please don’t miss out on this) you may enjoy the fine cuisine of the German people in the various coffee shops in town.

SPECIALISED ACTIVITIES - OPTIONAL

SEAL AND DOLPHIN CRUISE (Highlyrecommended)

The cold Atlantic waters off the Namibia coast are home to a wealth of marine life, including two dolphin species and a large colony of Cape Fur seal resident at Pelican Point. The 1.3 m-long Heavisides’ dolphins are seen less often. The Walvis Bay-based skippers are highly successful in tracking down the dolphins and giving their guests close-up views of the Cape Fur seals.

On this trip see how wild birds are fed by hand - even some very large Pelicans. Experience the thrill of dolphins leaping from the water alongside the boat, seals fed by hand, fresh oysters and cold sparkling wine on the calm water of the Walvis Bay Lagoon. This morning-only activity is an experience not to be missed. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Bookings are done on the train.

QUAD BIKES

Quad-biking is undeniably a fun and exhilarating activity. The combination of flying sand, fresh coastal air and freedom of the Namib Desert provides a top desert experience. To explore the dunes, guests are equipped with fully automatic quad bikes and no prior experience is needed as this is a fully guided tour.

At Swakopmund

ENJOY SWAKOPMUND

For those passengers who would like to enjoy the holiday town of Swakopmund, this is the day to do it. Visit some of the any coffee shops with delicious apple tarts and other savories or go the marble exhibition. Spend some time at the Light house, historical jetty or Tuck Boat Restaurant. A worthwhile place to visit is the brewery in town.

DAY 7               WINDHOEK

The city tour of Windhoek starts with a visit to the TransNamib Transport Museum. The museum is situated in the Windhoek Railway Station and was built from 1912 to 1913. In front of the building is the narrow-gauge locomotive (vintage 1900), that used to operate between Swakopmund and Windhoek.

The museum at the Alte Feste Castle offers a range of displays, including the Social History Gallery and the Independence Display. Both give an insight into Namibia’s complex history.

At the top of Robert Mugabe Avenue is the Christuskirche or Evangelical Lutheran Church. This is one of the city’s most striking landmarks and was built from local sandstone and completed in 1910. Romanesque, neo-Gothic and Art Nouveau styles influenced its design and Kaiser Wilhelm II donated its stained glass windows.

Our last visit is the Namibia Craft Centre in the old Breweries Building.

DAY 8 FISH RIVER CANYON, GIANT’S PLAYGROUND AND QUIVER TREE FOREST

We start our day with a visit to the Quiver Tree Forest, where around 300 specimens of this prehistoric tree, Aloe dichotoma, can be found. They grow between 3 and 5 meters tall and their forked branches reach skywards, affording beautiful photo opportunities.

Eroded over millennia, the Fish River Canyon is the second largest natural gorge in the world. Set in a harsh, stony plain, dotted with drought resistant succulents such as the distinctive Quiver Tree or ‘Kokerboom’, the canyon is a spectacular natural phenomenon. It took hundreds of millions of years to evolve into its current shape.

Its full length is 160km, the width up to 27 km and the depth 550 m. After a quick stopover at the famous Canyon Roadhouse, which is interestingly decorated with old car parts found in the region, we push further to Keetmanshoop for lunch (guests’ own account). In the afternoon we visit Giant’s Playground, an impressive jumble of massive dolerite boulders of 160 – 180 million years old.

The train departs for Upington and crosses via Ariamsvlei and Nakop border posts into South Africa early evening. Have your passports ready. (Customs and Entry Forms will be provided on the train).

DAY 9                    AUGRABIES NATIONAL PARK

Today we travel by bus on the N14 to Keimoes, a quaint little town situated on the northern bank of the Orange River. Look around this town and prepare yourself for the highlight of the day. The magnificent Augrabies Falls, we travel there via Kakamas. The stop at the falls will not be a whistle stop one and there will be time to enjoy a lunch snack.(for own account) The Augrabies Falls National Park is where the Orange River squeezes through a narrow channel and plummets into a dramatic, sheer-sided gorge. On our way back to the train we pass one or two points of interest in Upington.

DAY 10                         TRANSFER DAY

A late breakfast will be served on board the train before arriving at Boksburg East station. If guests are transferring to a hotel, this will be arranged for them in the morning. If guests are flying from OR Tambo International Airport, their flights may only be from 18:00 onwards, but prefarbly the next day (due to the train running possibly late). Bus transport will be made available free of charge.

ACCOMMODATION
General Information
• Beds are used in cabins as opposed to bunks.
• All cabins have a hand basin with running water.
• In the Ivory cabins the basins are covered by a folding table, which converts into a bedside table at night.
• Each cabin has a safe and plug point.

Accommodation description:
Emerald: Twin beds or double bed (Compartment), private lounge, with air con, safe, hand basin and running water – own bathroom facilities. (No one-bed coupes available)
Commodore: Twin beds or double bed (Compartment) with air con, safe, hand basin and running water – own bathroom facilities. (No one-bed coupes available)
Ivory: Twin beds (Compartment) or single bed (Coupe) with fan, safe, hand basin and running water – shared bathroom facilities. There is one shower and two toilets per carriage.
No more than two people will be allowed to share any compartment.
Extra carriages that could be different to current rolling stock may have to be added onto the train from time to time.

AIR-CONDITIONING
Air-conditioning (where available) will be operational while the generator is running. The generator normally runs for 24 hours per day except when there is a major breakdown.

ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE DETAILS
It is very important that the tour leader (on the train) has the guests’ arrival and departure details so that transfers may be organised and the train manager is aware of the times the guest will arrive and depart at the beginning and end of each trip.

CURRENCY
In Namibia the ‘Namibian Dollar’ and the ‘South African Rand’ is used. 1$N = 1ZAR

DINING CARRIAGE
The total seating capacity is 38. This means that there will be three meal sittings each session. Meal times largely depend on the activities planned for the day, but meals are generally served at the following times:

Dinner from 18:00 to 21:30
Cuisine on board includes traditional Cape Malay, Central -, West - and Southern African specialties. Breakfast offers both a traditional English and Continental breakfast selection.

• The dining car is a non-smoking area

DRESS CODE
As a relaxed atmosphere prevails on board, comfortable clothing is recommended.
Winter in Namibia can be cold and it is therefore advisable to bring along warm clothing for early mornings and evenings.

DRINKING WATER
We strongly advise against drinking the water in the cabins or bathrooms. Bottled water can be purchased from the bar.

ELECTRICITY
The electric current on board is 220 volt. Each compartment is fitted with a round 3-pin Socket (South African style). Adapter plugs and extension cables are available from the Assistant Train Manager. Please treat sockets as live at all times. Power is supplied by a generator. Please be aware that certain breaks in power are necessary.

HEATING
The Lounge and Dining room are heated via the air-conditioning unit.

INCLUSIVE OPTIONS
Daily excursions will be written on the white board in the lounge. Daily departure times depend on the nature of the activity. Most activities depart at 08:30, while others may depart earlier.

CREDIT CARD FACILITIES
Available on the train to pay for on-board services and optional excursions. I.e.: Dolphin & Seal cruise and Sossusvlei flights

KEYS
Cabin and safe keys will be handed to you by the Train Manager upon checking in. In the event that your keys are lost, or not handed back, a replacement fee of ZAR500.00 will be charged.

LAUNDRY
A laundry service is offered on board. A laundry bag is provided in your cabin with laundry costing between R3 and R15 an item, depending on the item. Clean laundry will be returned within 24 to 48 hours - the return time is dependent on weather conditions and traveling time of the train. Please refer to the laundry list provided in your ‘Welcome pack’.

LIBRARY
A small library is located on the train. Guests are free to make use of the books, but kindly return them before the end of the trip. The guide books are also for use by the guests but these must be returned at the end of each day.

LOUNGE / BAR CARRIAGE
The lounge / bar carriage has the following features:

• The dress code is casual

MEALS
If you have any special dietary requirements, kindly advise us before the start of the trip. This notification would enable the Train Manager to provide for your request. Lunch will be for each guest’s own account.

PASSPORTS & VISAS
Guests require valid passports for entry into Namibia. The passport should have at least two empty pages – not stamped. No visas needed for RSA residents.

RAILWAYS
We use the railway tracks of the national railways of South Africa and Namibia. Therefore the possibility exists that the trains will run late from time to time. Should the train be delayed, land activities may have to be shortened, altered or cancelled – for which we don’t accept responsibility and we cannot refund you since its out of our control and therefore unavoidable.

SAFE
There is a small safe located in each cabin.

SHEETS, TOWELS and PILLOWS
Sheets are changed every third day and towels are changed every second day. Extra pillows and blankets are available on request.

SHOWERS and TOILETS
The water used on the train is carried in tanks under each coach. These tanks are filled up every day, but they cannot be topped up while the train is in motion. Please use water sparingly.

SMOKING
Smoking on the train is only permitted when the train is moving and only allowed in designated areas. When the train is stationary you may only smoke outside on the platform.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

It is strongly recommended that all guests have comprehensive travel insurance including but not limited to medical cost, emergency evacuation & repatriation, cancellation or curtailment, loss of baggage, personal possessions or money.
